Growing up, our family always showed our love with food. My Grandma would let us choose a special cake out of one of her books for our birthday. My Mum would make us a special treat to celebrate an achievement at school. Every now and again, for no reason other than he felt like it, my Dad would cook a fancy meal and write out the menu as specials on a chalkboard. My other Grandma would bake scones and parkin just because she knew we were visiting.
It's no surprise then that cooking and baking are one of my preferred ways of showing someone I love them. Especially now I understand how much work baking can be. Don't get me wrong, I love it, but it would definitely be easier to pop to the shops for a card!
My husband and I don't really celebrate Valentines as such but to be honest, I can't let an excuse to bake him something pass me by (especially when I can combine it with my love of all things, pink, red and heart shaped) so over the next week or so I'm planning on sharing a few simple recipes that would make perfect gifts for a loved one on Valentines Day! Starting with these peppermint oreo truffles.
